Card Story: The Drive to Protect For the Sake of Others

Chapter 1 

Location: Figaro’s Clinic (Night)

Right after Mitile and the rest have gone to bed, Lennox and I find ourselves packing away all of the keepsakes we all shared during the dinner. 

Akira: You’re amazing at organizing, Lennox. You packed them all up in one go too…

Lennox: Not really. I started tidying the place earlier with Doctor Figaro when Mitile and the others started to become worn out from all of the festivities. 

(Rustling)

Lennox: Huh? This...brings me back good old memories.

Akira: Looks like some sort of banner. Can you tell what it’s supposed to say?

Lennox: It says here: “Have a safe trip, Lennox!”

Akira: How come does it say “Have a safe trip”?

Lennox: I spent more time out of town with my job working as a shepherd. 

When I stayed over at this clinic together with Mitile and the rest, they all made this for me right before I headed off. 

This was made during that time, huh?

Blinded by the nostalgia, Lennox fixates at the banner with soothing, gentle eyes. 

Akira: Oh, I understand. That must be a wonderful memory to ponder about.

(Just as I thought, everyone has wonderful memories of their own…)

Oh, I got an idea!

Lennox: Master Sage? What’s the matter?

Akira: Mitile and the rest worked to the bone to protect this clinic lately, right?

So I wondered if it would be nice if we could decorate the whole place to celebrate keeping this place safe and at the same time to express our thanks…

Lennox: Sounds like a great idea. Let me help you out too.

Akira: Thanks for offering to help! Let’s go ask Figaro for his permission first. 

Lennox: We should also ask if he can offer us a long piece of cloth to write the message on too. 

Akira: Got it!

Akira: How nice that we got lots of banner cloths and colored paper to work with for the decorations! What kind of message should we write?

Lennox: I wonder what kind of message we should do…

Akira and Lennox: …

(Footsteps) 

Nero: You fellas not gonna hit the sack yet?

Akira: Oh, hey! It’s Nero!

Nero: Was thinkin’ of preparing some warm milk if y’all havin’ some troubles in catching some z’s, but seems like ya busy with somethin’. 

Lennox: We were actually...

Chapter 2

Location: Figaro’s Clinic (Night)

Nero: Y’all were busy with decorating? Well, since they worked our asses off in this mission, a nice reward would be deserved after all.

If it doesn’t bother ya, want me to help out also? 

Akira: Ah, thank you Nero! Weren’t you worn out from this mission though?

Nero: Same question for you, guys. Don’tcha worry ‘bout me since I don’t think I’ll be heading off to bed soon. 

Lennox: Nero’s skillful with his hands after all. Thanks for lending your hand. 

Nero: Not at all. Just ‘cause you know a thing or two about cookin’, doesn’t automatically mean you’re good with one’s hands.

Nero: Did ya ever fight with wolves using your bare hands before? That sorta is an amazing first-hand experience for ya, huh?

Akira: The time when you were working as a shepherd, you were all on your own right? Wasn’t it difficult for you since you had to only depend on yourself to take care of your own injuries?

Lennox: My own injuries can be taken care of using just my magic and herbs. But then…

By the time I went back here in the South, I told Mitile and the others about what went down and they ended up being worried for me. 

As they were sending me off, they wished me well and also wished for me to take good care of myself too. I couldn’t get myself to ignore what they did. 

Ever since that happened,  I eventually started to think about myself a bit more. 

Akira: Oh, I see…

Nero: It’s nice to think about these kinds of things. Others will just brush it off and end up not caring. From now on, let’s make sure to keep those thoughts in mind in the future. 

All for the sake of our friends, Figaro…even the rest of the wizards in the manor.

Lennox: Yeah, you’re right. 

Nero: Alright, just one last push! Y’all are doin’ an amazing job, guys. 

How ‘bout we take a breather? Lemme getcha some drinks for a sec. 

As we saw Nero going out of the room, Lennox looked my way. 

Lennox: I want to talk to you about something, Master Sage.

Chapter 3

Location: Figaro’s Clinic (Day)

Mitile: Wow! What’s going on here!? These decorations––Hey! Look at that, brother! There’s a message written there!

Rutile: Looking at these reminds me of the time when we made decorations just for Mister Leno when he was left for work. 

Hehe. How thoughtful of him to return the favor to us. 

Shino: This beetle’s made out of colored paper. That’s really cool. 

Heathcliff: Even if the Master Sage and the others became exhausted after a long day, they still took their time to put up wonderful decorations in just one night...I can’t thank them enough...

The next morning, I couldn’t help but beam ear to ear when everyone else was marveling at the decorations we put up last night.

Akira: All thanks to Nero’s help, the end result looked way more beautiful than what I envisioned at first. 

Lennox: Truly. I’m glad to have witnessed the smiles on their faces. 

Nero: Oh hey, look at that. Looks like Shino’s digging the decorations y’all worked very hard on.

Hmm...? Where are ya going to put that decoration that you are holding in yer hand?

Lennox: I made this to give it to you, Nero. 

Nero: That supposed to be for me?

Nero tilted his head at the colored paper made flower that Lennox gifted to him. 

Nero: Is this...some message card? When did ya make this? 

Lennox: When you left the room one time earlier. 

I wanted to thank you for helping us out earlier with the decorating. I also wanted to thank you for all of the meals you always cooked and served us. 

Nero: What? 

Lennox: The food you cook is made with your own flesh and blood.* All thanks to you, it gives me the strength to be able to protect Mitile and the rest each time I undergo a mission. 

And that’s why...I want to thank you for everything, Nero. 

Nero: You guys...That’s really sincere from y’all...

Thanks...I also wanna thank you, Sage too. I’ll make sure to take good care of it. 

Akira: It's no problem at all! 

Lennox: This will do as a test run for now, I think. 

Nero: A test run? 

Lennox: I thought of decorating Nero’s room with all kinds of ribbons and colored paper by the time we get back to the manor. 

Nero and Akira: Huh!? 

Akira: Um...Lennox, you know there’s many other ways to show your thanks to Nero...

Lennox: Oh, nevermind. I apologize, Master Sage. I meant it as a joke...

Akira: That was supposed to be a joke!? 

Nero: Haha. Yer jokes are so confusing to understand. 

To be honest, I’m not into the idea of ya decorating my space, but feel free to stop by for some cup of tea anytime. It's a token of thanks for this little gift. 

Lennox: I see, thanks. I look forward to it when the time comes.

TL Note:  

In this sentence, Lennox uses 血や肉 which refers to blood and flesh/meat in Japanese. 

I think it's worth to note that the phrase flesh and blood is mentioned several times in the Bible which talks about how Jesus shares his life, his blessings and gift of food and drinks with his followers––is it also a coincidence that both Jesus and Lennox are shepherds? (I don’t want to make this too long but based on this analogy, I assume he wants to thank Nero for sacrificing his time and effort in cooking food for the rest of the wizards in the manor, even if he doesn’t have to.)

Card Episode: The Ones Who Are Considerate of Others

Location: Manor Courtyard (Day)

Akira: Thanks for being willing to help out with the surprise at Figaro’s clinic, Lennox.

Lennox: Don't mention it. I wanted to thank you also, Master Sage. We were able to create some wonderful memories together.

I didn’t expect Nero to help us out either so it was nice to get the chance to talk with him out of the blue. 

Akira: Speaking of which, I was wondering about what do you think about Nero? It’s rare to see you two talking this much more than before so I thought it would be a good chance to bring this up. 

Lennox: I think Nero is skilled in being considerate to others. 

Whenever someone’s feeling low, he always makes sure to whip up their favorite food on the table. 

Akira: Indeed...It’s true that Nero pays close attention to people. He’s amazing at sensing and supporting other people’s feelings…

Aside from the food he makes, Eastern wizard’s missions tend to go smoothly all thanks to the support from Nero! 

Lennox: You’re right. I have a lot of respect for Nero's attentiveness because it’s not easy to achieve the same level of being detail orientated as him. 

Akira: Come to think of it, I do believe Lennox is the Nero of the Southern Wizards. 

Lennox: You think so?

Akira: I do! You two are very much on the same wavelength actually. 

Lennox: Thank you. I’ll get the chance to talk to Nero again when I get to drink tea with him sometime.
